PRESS RELEASE
The Turkish Government cut off the supply of electricity to the Governorate of Duhok on 2nd January 2008. The Iraqi Federal Ministry of Electricity renewed the contract with the supplier company until 30 June 2008 and fulfilled all of its obligations in accordance with the terms of the contract. The Government of Turkey is still refusing the resumption of electricity supply to Duhok. Turkey, has been supplying Iraq, for the past 4 years with an average of 150 MW of electricity. We believe that there is no justification for this action and it will greatly harm the people of Duhok and the relationship between Iraq and Turkey. The Governorate of Duhok with a population of 900,000 people is now receiving 35 MW of electricity from the Federal Grid which is insufficient to meet the minimum demand for power to maintain essential services such as hospitals, schools and water supply projects. We call upon the Government of Turkey to reconsider this decision and restore the power supply to Duhok as soon as possible.
